Mayfield Township

ROBINSON CEMETERY HISTORY

The Robinson Cemetery aka Mayfield Methodist Church Cemetery? on Ault road near Base Line road was located in Section 6 of the township. There was a church, which is no longer in existence, on Base Line road near the cemetery location. A few stones remain visible along Ault road; however, it has been reported several years ago that some stones were removed by vandals and eventually removed to a safe keeping on the Ault farm 1/4 mile South of Base Line road and West of Ault road.

The land for the cemetery was owned by William Robinson in 1849. In 1892, a cemetery is shown on the plat map indicating the land is owned by William Robinson. Mrs. Amanda Robinson was the daughter of A. G. Nickerson. It is assumed that the small community of property owners: namely, Thomas Mc Carry, Henry Rhote, A. H. Arnold, M. Ault, Martin Wike, E. Nickerson, M. Nickerson, Mary Gross, William Yonkin, and Wm. Remala, property owners in Sections 5 and 6 in 1871, may have been part of a group forming the established church on Base Line road.

According to one family source, Mulford Nickerson followed his eldest son to Illinois. He came with his wife, Eunice, and their children, Eunicette, Charles Giles (d 1849), and Dean G. Another daughter, Amanda, came with her husband and two children, Eunicette and William H.    This person states the name should be ROBISON according to other records; however, we must record our records as they are indicated. Mulford Nickerson remarried, after his wife died, Eunicette Robinson and they moved to California. The eldest son of Mulford was Wm. A. who married Julia Ann Ault. They moved to '"the Michigan wilderness" in 1862 and were followed by three brothers.
