004 1905 003 1905 Congdon Waterman Illinois Year Book Including-PREFACE-                                      Again I am sending forth a volume of the Year Book.  Publication has been delayed far beyond my own anticipations.  A change of the field of my labors has been one cause of its lateness, as also the fact that its preparation must ever be made subordinate to my principal work that of teaching,  The present volume will be found more than usually full, with several new features added.  No one regrets more than I the fact that some of the biographical sketches are exceedingly short, but as a rule the length was limited only by the amount of information obtainable.  Relatives and interested persons were appeaed to but neglected or refused to reply.  My chief interest is in the excellence of the volume and not in the financial returns,  If you are willing to cooperate with me in making the book the best possible, accord all my letter a prompt, careful and complete reply.                                                                                                                            The printers have aided me in every way in my desire to make the book of a high grade mechanically and I believe it will be found unusually free from errors.  G.E. Congdon.      Hiawatha, Kansas, May 18, 1907,

(1848) was born in Melugin's Grove.  Page 42- m. 1871 to Mary Morey, dau of Edwin Morey, Lee Center, eight children.  Oliver P. died 1905.  (!/2 of this page is devoted to J.P. Johnson's (Child 6) memories of his dad.  "O. P. Johnson was m. 1833 in Ross Grove, settled in Johnson's Grove the same year, the Johnsons attented the first Old Settlers' Picnic, 1877, and he claimed at that event to have settled at the grove in 1834.  R. M. Pritchard's published letters state the Johnson's settlement as 1835.  Mr. Pritchard was born in 1830 and his father bought Johnson's claim when he left it.  Mr. Pritchard's exactness and known intelligence favor his dates.  Opposed to the earlier dates:  History of LaSalle Co., Vol. 2, p. 168, speaking of Adams twp. says "In the same year (1834) Messrs. Ross and Johnson made some improvements on the south side of the grove, but sold it and left the next year."  This seems to favor Mr. Pritchard's date.  The same volume page 885, says "The first marriage (in Adam's Twp.) was that of O. P. Johnson and wife.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. George Bags"  Further the first settlers of Paw Paw twp. (Ross Grove) came early in 1835 and "Joseph Ross," says the DeKalb Co. Album, "was among the pioneers of 1836."
