Patience Matilda Havens

Patience Matilda Havens was born July 17, 1817 in Milo, Yates County, N.Y. She removed with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cyrenius Smith, to Branchport, in 1829, and was married to Jacob W. Cortright February 27, 1832. To them were born three children, Oscar, Emily and Smith, the youngest of whom survives.

Her husband died in 1841, and she was married to Albert Abbott Havens on March 24, 1850. To this union were born four children, Mrs. Sanford Townsend, of Lake City, Ia.; Miss Elizabeth Havens and A.B. Havens, both of Cortland; Moritta, who died in infancey, and Mrs. Jane Fenton, of Charter Grove. Albert A. Havens died March 15, 1888.

Patience Havens died October 28, 1905. She was a member of the Baptist church in Penn Yan, N.Y.

They removed from Pulteney, N.Y. to Sycamore in 1854., then to Cortland in 1855 where the remainder of her life was spent. She had lived here the longest of any resident in Cortland.

Mrs. Havens had been a patient sufferer for several years, but had been confined to her bed only two days before she died.

She leaves not only relatives to mourn her departure, but a host of loving friends.

She was ready and willing to go when her master called, having lived a true Chistian life. She enjoyed greatly the company of the young people, who never tired hearing her tell those interesting stories of her childhood; and not one of them will ever forget how often she has pointed them to the Christian life she tried to follow.

There are surviving 23 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; also one sister, Lemetta J. Eves, of Penn Yan, N.Y.

The funeral was held at the Cortland M.E. church, Tuesday, October 31, at 10 a.m., C.S. Moore, of Sycamore, officiating.
