Sycamore True Republican

13 August 1906

Charles S. Snow, an old resident of this city and well known character, dropped

dead in Tom Branen’s saloon at 5:30 yesterday morning.  Snow was an early riser

and as usual was bout on the street at 5 o’clock.  For some time he has been in

the habit of calling at Branen’s saloon every morning to help with the daily

cleaning up.  He appeared in his usual health and mood on yesterday morning.

Passing the postoffice a few minutes after five he exchanged the morning greeting

with Mr. Martin who is always on hand daily.  Snow apparently was on his way

to the saloon and had been there only a few minutes when he threw up his arms

and fell back dead.  The body was removed to Steenrod’s undertaking rooms

of the coroner was at once summoned.

The jury after an examination rendered a verdict attributing death to “heart dis-

sease caused by excessive drinking of alcoholic beverages.”

Mr. Snow was born in Wayne county, N.Y., in 1833.  During the year 1841 he

came to Sycamore and located on a farm.

Later he took up the blacksmithing trade which he followed for 55 years, or until

his age compelled him to give up active labor.

He was twice married.  For the past six or sever years he has lived alone on

South Locust street, his second wife having secured a divorce.  A son, Harry,

lives at South Chicago.  One brother, F. Snow of this city also survives.
